As you walk over to the deputy you can feel the eyes upon you. Civilans and Vigilantes alike, you reckon.

You slap the deputy on the cheek and he shakes his head, his eyes fluttering open. "Are you all right?" You ask.

"I'm-" He begins before a gun shot rings out behind you. You pull him to his feet and rush into the sheriff's office as a second bullet whistles past your ear and crashes through the glass window that looked in on the jail house.

You throw the deputy behind one desk and dive behind another. One more gun shot goes off and the bullet buries itself into the side of the desk just as you duck behind it.

The gun shots stop for a while.

You chance a glance around the desk and spy the deputy clutching at the grip of a revolver and breathing heavily. His eyes are wide with fear. You realize that this is most likely the first gun fight he has ever been in. He glances back at you and your eyes meet.

"What in the hell did you get me involved in?!" He asks with a quavering voice.

"I didn't do a damn thing. Those are Vigilantes shooting at us," You tell him.

It doesn't seem to calm him. "How many are there?" He asks you before taking a swallow.

"I don't know," You reply honestly, "I was too busy dodging bullets to count."

"Good," The deputy smiles nervously.

"Can you shoot that thing?" You ask him.

"I wouldn't be a deputy if I couldn't," He responds curtly.

"Good. We're gonna shoot a couple'a shots off real quick on the count of three." He nods to you in understanding.

"You ready?" You ask. He nods again. "One... Two..." He bites his lower lip.

"Three," You say. The two of you stand simultaneously and start blasting bullets into the gun toting Vigilantes. Three of them fall from the five bullets shot.

You duck back down behind the desks. "You find out how many there were?" You ask the deputy as the Vigilantes return fire.

"No," He says; "I was too busy trying to shoot the bastards to count."

"There were nine," You tell him. "There's six left." You reload your gun while you wait for the gun shots to stop.

"Is there a back door?" You ask.

He says yes.

You glance behind you and risk a peek over the desk top. There are more than six of them now. You should probably head for the back door.

The BOOM of a hand cannon gets you back to staying low. You can probably sneak out the back. You look to the deputy who is preparing for the next barrage of bullets on the Vigilantes.

The noble thing would be to tell him to make a break for the back on the count of three, but you wonder if your chances for survival would be better if you told him to fire on three while you sneak out the back alone...

You start counting.
