Paco Valdez
"When I say three, we fire on them and run out the back," You tell him.
"One... Two... Three," The two of you stand and fire, the deputy charges past you for the back door and you quickly follow suit.
You pass a man in a cell who begs to be set free for fear of the gunshots, but the two of you ignore him and step out the back into an alleyway that runs behind the buildings, lined with a wooden fence on one side.
"The stables are that way," He tells you, pointing with his finger. "We'd best get the hell outta here."
You agree whole heartedly. Sticking around with a bunch of Vigilantes just seems stupid.
He leads the way, running up the alleyway with you keeping up well enough.
A gun shot rings out behind you, the boom echoing off of the buildings, the bullet bouncing off the fence and landing harmlessly in the ground at you feet. You turn around and return fire, doing your best with accuracy while on the move. The two shots do little more than cause the Vigilante to momentarily discontinue pursuit.
You reach the stables just as another gun shot rings out behind you. The deputy mounts a random horse and you are able to find Betty, your own horse. The two of you trot out o the stables to find a fierce looking pack of outlaws waiting for you; half a dozen mean looking faces staring you down.
You open fire before they have the chance and the deputy follows suit. The Vigilantes fall before you like dominoes.
You ride out of town as quickly as you can manage, before any more of the outlaws can spot you. The two of you ride on in the desert, the hot sun beating down on you from above, until you reach the outcrop of stone known as Coyote Rock. There, you rest your horses and rest yourselves.
"So what do we do, deputy?" You ask him.
"I ain't for sure what you do," He replies; "As for me, I'm gonna head back into town come nightfall."
"You're gonna head back into town?" You ask incredulously; "With all those Vigilantes hungry for revenge?"
He waves a hand dismissively in the air. "I ain't worried none about them Vigilantes," He says. "I'm gonna report all of this to the Sherrif and we'll take care of it."
You take a brief swig from the flask of whiskey in your shirt before responding. "Deputy or no," You tell him, "I don't think it's wise to go back into the town."
"I'll be fine," He says. "Me an' the Sherriff'll take are of things.
"I don't mean to imply anything," You say to him, holding your flask out for him to take; "But do you ever think that maybe Sheriff Valdez might not be the most trust worthy man. I mean, he is Paco Valdez's brother."
He takes the flask graciously and sips from it before handing it back. "Those two are like night an' day, they are."
"Then why is the Vigilante stronghold located in the same town as Sheriff Valdez? I have my doubts that that's a coincidence."
"Listen,' He says, his face reddening a bit in anger, "You don' know the man like I do. There has never been a finer law man than Manuel Valdez. He'll clean up this Vigilante Menace, you'll see."
You decide not to press the argument further. The two of you sit under the shade of coyote rock for the better part of the day until the sun begins to set. At that point you shake hands and wish one another luck. You watch the deputy ride back towards town for a while before getting on Betty and riding away in the opposite direction.
Months pass before you catch wind of the deputy's demise. They say he was attacked in the night by several Vigilantes. They say the Sheriff was out of town that day. How convenient, you muse.
You also hear word of Annie and Gus. It seems their bank robbing days have come to an end. There was a shoot out at the Fargo Bank that resulted in the deaths of both of them, and four town marshals to boot. Sounds like they went down fighting.
You work as a manual laborer in a small town with a pretty wealthy civilian population. You make plans for some of the homes. You're just waiting for the right moment to make your move. Seems like the town annual will be the perfect time to rob them blind. And that's tomorrow night.
