"Putting the cart before the horse, are we?" said the other voice. "Or were you just going to create a random person to keep us company here in the formless void?"

"It wouldn't be a formless void if you would stop destroying everything," I muttered. "I don't see why it matters. It's kind of boring to have a vast world filled with people I don't care about. This way, it gives me a vested personal interest in the reality."

"So, rather than focus on everyone's well-being, you just pick out a few favorites, and make their lives incredibly awesome? Well, I'm sure that's fair. I bet the rest of the people would be okay with knowing that their lives are doomed to pitiable monotony just so one person can be a hero."

"I am capable of multitasking!" I yelled. "Just because one person is created first, that doesn't mean that I'll be ignoring everyone else."

"Sure," the other voice replied, dripping with sarcasm. "I believe you."

"Now I just need to determine what kind of hero to create," I said, ignoring his bated attempt to start an argument. "I mean, whatever world I decide to create, that's going to affect the type of hero I can have. I mean, I could always go with the big, strong, muscular type. Sure, it's a pretty common stereotype... but it's common because it works, you know? On the other hand, I could always go with someone who is strong in a different sense of the word. Maybe my hero should be a gifted mage, who is capable of great feats of arcane might. Or perhaps I should subvert the whole thing? Maybe I should make a hero whose true strength is intelligence?"

"Does it really make that much of a difference?" asked the other voice. "You're just going to end up babysitting the hero anyway. It's not like they're going to face any real hardships."

"That's not true, and you know it," I said. "I'll be making plenty of hardships for them. And you probably will to," I added.

"That is simply not true," said the other voice. "I would never interfere with your work."
