Brothers

The silence seems to take hold of the moment, it reaches a point far beyond awkwardness before you speak.

"That's terrible news," you say at last.

She puts on a sad smile and a tear rolls down her cheek. "I know," she says in a voice that fights not to tremble.

"How long do we have together?" You ask.

"Two weeks," she says, repeating the information she already gave you.

"Well then, let's make this the best two weeks of our lives," you say.

She smiles a bit at this. Dinner is soon served. The steaks before you isn't nearly as good as you'd hoped it would be; the taste tainted with tears.

The evening turns out to be a real drag.

The next several days you spend exclusively with Gwen, cherishing the moments you have together; the whole time you can't shake sadness of knowing that she will soon be gone.

The two of you make love on the night before she moves away. It is bittersweet.

You promise to keep in touch. You stand on the curb waving to her as she stares out the back window and the car drives away. The love of your life, gone forever.

When you get back home you go sraight to your room and do your best to ignore everyone else. For one day you are not concerned about anyone but yourself. It would almost feel good if it didn't feel so bad.

A few hours later a knock sounds at your door. You want to ignore it, to get through your night of sadness so that you can function the next day... But what if it's something important?
