Much of Nothing

You consider the options for a few seconds before announcing your decision to take the more difficult path. The reward at the end of the harder path seems better, and that makes it worth the extra effort. Philosophically, this shows a profound depth of character. It shows that you are willing to work for what you get and strive for your goals. It shows that you understand and accept that greater rewards come from a greater workload.

"You're a fucking dick, man." Dan says to you. "I don't see why we can't just walk through a couple of trees and stand at the rivers edge to smoke."

The girl says nothing, but heads on up the path you indicated without looking back. Dan stares you down for a minute with angry eyes burning into you. You shoulder past him and hear him bitch for a second before falling into line behind you.

The path is well made but filled with treacherous dips and rises. Sometimes the rises are so steep that steps had to be dug into the earth in order for the trail to continue. At one point the left side of the path is edged by a small cliff that leads in to a crag some twenty feet deep. No one falls in.

There is a bench at the side of the trail and you watch as the girl walks right past it. Dan stops at in front of it and catches his breath. You are huffing and puffing and stop at his side, the two of you trying to catch your breath while the girl walks on oblivious to the fact that her company has stopped.

"That's the nicest fucking bench I've ever fucking seen," Dan says between heavy breaths.

"You ain't joking," You reply.

From a ways up the trail, you hear the girl call out to you. "Hey! What the hell are you guys doing?!"

"Resting!" Dan calls back.

She throws her hands up in disgust. "How can you be that tired?!"

"I'm a lazy bastard!" He shouts back. "This is a lot of work!!"

"I can hear the waterfall from here!" She yells.

Dan turns to you, "Man, I don't want to walk no more."

Dan obviously wants to rest, his chest still heaves with each heavy breath he takes. And this wouldn't really be a bad spot to smoke, but the waterfall looms not far ahead, and Dan will most likely want to turn back around after smoking. Maybe you can convince the girl up the trail of this.

You strain your ears, but cannot hear anything from where you stand. The
waterfall can't be far ahead if she can hear it from where she's standing though. It would suck to come all this way and not see the waterfall, but there is a bench right here and your legs feel like jelly.
