The Wookens are a simple and brutal race. Large with an impressive musculoskeletal system somewhere between that of a primates and a big cats they exhibit many of the traits of a predatory race. They have little regard for life as a whole and might be seen to casually kill an animal for sport even when not intending to eat it. They practice canibalizm but mostly of the already or nearly dead and hold no particular reverence for those who have passed on. They make poor herdsman and have no biological need for farming. Their culture is not advanced enough to produce grain for farm animals. They do remarkably well at managing wild herds of herbavores though. They often kill off almost all natural predators in an area then keep a good breeding stock of animals being sure to prune off the weak and elderly while keeping a manageable level of breeding males and sparing most of the young until they are a greater size.
They practice a high degree of stratification and selective breeding. The males dominate the social structure exclusively with no one knowing how intelligent their females truly are as they are kept strictly separate and almost exclusively for purely breeding purposes. This means that they live fairly indolent lives of leisure with castrated (primarily white) males serving as care takers. That’s not to say that their lives appear easy as they seem to be worn thin with many breeding partners specially choosen for certain traits by the ruling wizarding class with frequent births to support the war effort. Such traits might include size, color, and stupidity in the warrior classes. Muscle tone, color and just enough intelligence in the scout class, and high intelligence, color and magic ability in the wizarding class. They primarily breed white furs for their docility. With a thousand years to practice they have managed to specialize their classes quite well, sometimes to the point where it can become very difficult for certain classes to interbreed. For instance black furred warrior pups are born so large now it can kill a mother and babes of a smaller female of another class if forced to bear its children.
There is a lot of evidence showing that the white furred Wooken were once the ruling class and warrior class back when the Wooken primarily lived the frozen high mountain ranges of the Far East. Wizardry was seen as an almost effeminate practice and scorned by the white furred who dominated due in part to their excellent camouflage of the region. Greens similarly ruled primarily in the lower mountain regions. Black furred Wooken were very rare at that time but growing as a population based on gene strength but seen as almost useless in both regions due to its lack of camouflage ability in all but the densest forest, deepest cave, or darkest night.
The downfall of both the white mountain top dwellers and the green forest dwellers came because of how much they underestimated the brown furred Wooken who sought to elevate their status with the power of magic and the dark arts. They were also very clever first using the black furred Wooken as a wedge to drive at the heart of the other two races and later with their control of the breeding programs insuring the other fur colors remained either docile or too unintelligent to pose a real risk.
Their tech level is low and primarily consists of scavenging existing gear from humans then setting low level brown or white furred Wooken to adapting it crudely to fit their purposes. They have no written language so history, such as it is, it often passed on orally or through crude cave drawings. Similarly laws are few and far between often consisting of little more then ‘follow the wizard class’, ‘keep away from the females unless given permission’ and ‘don’t make such a mess of things that the wizards have to put you down.’
