In The Day

People spread false information all the time. It's probably not even real. How could we only have twelve years before we had to save the Earth? It seems too absurd, that's so short of a time period to figure everything out.

"There's no way that that's true," you say, looking up at your friend.

"It is," they shrugged their shoulders, "I mean, it was on the news and is backed up by scientists so..." their sentence drug on.

Great, you think to yourself, talk about a depressing dinner conversation. Couldn't you two talk about music? Or work? Or anything else but this?

You didn't know what to say, and thankfully, your waitress came up to your table and saved you from a tense conversation.

"What can I get you two to drink?" They asked.

You opened your mouth to speak, but your friend beat you to it.

"I'll have some iced water and I don't need a straw."

You look over at them in confusion. Why would they say that they don't need a straw? What's the big deal?

The waitress looks over at you, waiting for your drink order.

"I'll just have a water," you say.

"Do you not need a straw, as well?" They ask.
