Lost in a Good Book- A Child's Tale
Rebecca studied the book entitled "Eragon," there was a large dragon on the cover. It looked kind of interesting. She started to open the cover, then realized she might not want to be sucked into a world with a dragon. Indeed it seemed like a decidedly bad idea. Instead she picked up a book with a little boy riding a broom. He wasn't really so small, but it was only a drawing, so he seemed small.
Carefully she put her thumb under the cover and turned to chapter one. She was surrounded by ugly people almost instantly, loud ugly people, with funny accents. They seemed mean, and she didn't want them to notice her, so she crept slowly to a little closet under the stairs and climbed in. She was shocked that there was already a boy there. He seemed to be hiding as well.
"Hi," she whispered.
The boy blinked at her from behind large round spectacles. His hair was a complete disaster, and his clothes were entirely too large. Someone bellowed from another room. Rebecca peeped out through the crack in the door. The boy jumped up and taking her shoulders turned her around so she was sitting on his bed as he crept out into the hall. He had an air of defeat that she didn't much like. She had the impression that he didn't want her to leave.
She was more than happy to go through his stuff. Unfortunately, it didn't take long. Oversized clothes, broken toys, and absolutely nothing of interest- What kind of book had a boring main character? She scoffed absentmindedly and decided to leave the closet behind. She walked past the living room where a man was chastising the boy. She waved brightly at him, hoping to cheer and bolster him before walking out front door and down the steps.
The oddest thing was happening overhead, owls were gathering in masses. She walked toward a cute little one and noticed something wrapped round its ankle. She went to untangle it, but it snapped at her faster than her mother ever had. She scowled at the wretch and decided to let it suffer.
A woman came puttering up the street wrapped in a moth eaten sweater, and followed by no less than four cats. What an odd and disjointed place this was. She turned around to see the large ugly man in the house she had departed nailing boards over the windows. The birds meanwhile were becoming increasingly agitated on their perches. A few took flight and began attacking the house dropping actual packages in and around the places not nailed shut.
After this had gone on for a while the family piled into the car. Rebecca only thought she wanted to see where they were going, and she began to shift from inside. She was getting the hang of this whole book thing. When she landed beside a dilapidated house, on a dilapidated island she almost wished she could take it back. There was a storm coming, and so quietly she slipped inside.
The family had already settled down for the night, except the boy from the closet. He was wishing himself a happy birthday when a knock rattled the door. No one moved to answer it, after all they were trying to get away even she understood that much. The visitor would not be ignored however, and Rebecca watched astonished as the door fell flat to reveal the largest man she had ever seen.
Rebecca stuck around long enough to see him rescue the boring lad, and turn the chubby one into a pig tailed pansy. She was more than a little relieved he hadn't noticed her. He tucked a tattered umbrella under his arm, and led the boy away.
Rebecca felt like following them, but instead ended up on the outside of the book back in the library. She was annoyed- things had just gotten interesting. Frantically she flipped a few pages, but it was just an ordinary book, with black print on white paper. Annoyed she set the book down and moved to something else.
