Brothers

"What the hell was that?" You ask.

"I-" she begins, her mouth agape as though searching for but not finding the words.

"This is what you did on spring break?"

"I asked you to come with me," she says.

"I didn't know you'd be sucking random cocks if I didn't come with you!" You scream at her, your voice taking on the characteristics of a bestial growl.

She stares back at you in silence.

"Why would you do something like this to me?" You ask, your voice cracking. You curse yourself for being so emotional. You don't want to cry, but you can feel it coming on.

"Paul," she says, stepping forward and reaching a hand out to you.

"Don't fucking touch me!" You yell. "Get the hell out of here," you say. "I don't ever want to see you again!" Your words, intended to be given in a cool but malicious tone, come out in a rage filled scream that cracks off at the end as you run out of breath.

She doesn't move at first, just stares dumbly back at you.

"GO!" you shout, taking an angry and threatening step towards her. She jumps a little, slips her shoes on, and exits your dorm room.

The moment the door closes, you start throwing things around; anything that's near goes crashing to the wall.

After some time of this you collapse onto the couch in tears. Your heart has been shattered to shards, and you aren't sure it can ever be repaired.

The next few days are hell. Everything reminds you of her, of the good times. All the beauty of your relationship is now tainted with a poison that has killed you inside.

You destroy everything that you associate with her, anything that reminds you of a once cherished memory, anything with a hint of her aroma.

Kate calls you now and then, leaving messages on your machine. You ignore her calls, cursing her and beating the machine for transmitting her messages.

As the weeks pass the pain diminishes and, though still present, it doesn't hurt the way it used to. There have been a few girls who expressed an interest in dating you, but you've made excuses for all of them.

One night there is a knock at the door. You open it to find Kate staring back at you. A surge of emotions floods through you; pain, regret, sorrow, desire, hatred, loneliness, and longing; all intermingling within. Your stomach churns a bit, and you feel like vomiting.

"Hello Paul," she says with wide and serious eyes.
