The Thing Revisited

After about another hour of traveling through the Antarctic Snow, Riles raised his right arm to signal a stop as the three men rounded a large snowdrift on their left. As the three men's snowmobiles came to a halt parallel to one another, Walker lowered the handkerchief covering his mouth and said, "My God."

The remnants of what must have been Outpost #31 sat clustered and shattered in a menagerie of twisted metal and burnt buildings. No structure appeared undamaged from whatever catastrophe had occurred to the Outpost.

Davison, mouth drawn free of his own winter gear asked, "What the hell happened, and where are the scientists?" Riles shook his head and replied, "I don't know, but we had better take a look around the camp and see if we can find anyone. I don't know if we are going to find any survivors if the generators heating this place are gone too."

Each mans face taken a grim setting; the three men moved their snowmobiles forward at almost perfect unison and drove forward into a small clearing between the buildings.

Dismounting, Riles motioned the two other men over to him. Riles said "I think we should split up and take a look around the camp for the scientists, and maybe get some clues to what the hell went on here." Davison timidly asked, "Well, I would like to stick with one of you guys, this place gives me the creeps." With a small grin and grudging respect for the youths honesty, Riles said, "Fine, why don't you and Walker head over to the main building area and I'll take a look around by these outbuildings." Walker and Davison nodded agreement.

Riles turned to go and said, "Oh, and be careful, who knows what went on around here."
