The Thing Revisited

Deciding that he can't count on the other two men to be in any condition to assist him or they, Davison began to the Zipper a bit looser until a fair amount of snow began to tumble into the tent. Carefully, Davison scooped snow into the corner of the tent as more snow began to tumble in from above.

Realizing that his efforts could be in vein as snow began to cascade through the zippered void, Davison called "Guys! Hello, I need some help in here!"

Suddenly, Davison could hear Riles call "Christ, the kid!"

As snow continued to fill the tent, Davison began to feel the claustrophobia began to seemingly tiptoe up from the small of his back. He felt that if the sensation reached his head, he would truly panic.

Frantically, Davison called, "Hey, a little help here!"

A hand thrust through the hole in the tent. If Davison hadn't been in a near panic, he would have giggled because the sight of the hand reminded him of the hand of God painted on the walls of European churches, reaching out to save the wayward soul.

Davison heard Riles yell, "Kid, if you see my hand take it and I'll pull you through!"

Grasping Riles hand in a firm grip, Davison could feel the older man's grip tighten and his body began to slide upward through the snow and into the sunlight above. As Davison's head emerged, he could see that Riles was being held by Walker, who was tugging at the legs of Riles prone body. All three men gasping for air, Davison was pulled free of the hole.

Sitting up onto his right elbow, Walker said, "OK, I'm making it a rule that we don't go rescuing scientists in snow storms from here on out." All three men laughed cheerily at the joke.

After another hour of digging, the men were able to uncover the snowmobiles enough to get them free of the snowdrift that had enveloped them as it had Davison's survival tent.

As the three set out again, Davison looked back and was thankful that the spot hadn't been his icy grave.
