The Thing Revisited

Although Outpost #31 was a scant 20 miles from the Bay of Trepidation, the going was slow for the three men as they moved cautiously with their snowmobiles around snow drifts and deep crevices.

With a starting jerk, Riles straightened in his seat when his pager sent a small buzz through his middle. Waiving his right arm signaling a stop, the three men halted their progress as Riles pulled out his pager.

The pager had a simple message from Shaffer "Sudden and severe storm headed your way, take cover in survival tents."

Riles looked up at the sky. Although cloudy, the sky held patches of sunlight that beamed through and played on the snow of the landscape. It didn't appear to him to hold any menace.

Pulling down his face cover to speak to the two other men, Riles said, "Captain Shaffer has sent us a message that a storm is coming through. It doesn't look to me like anything is shaken, but we might want to consider breaking out the survival tents in case of a big blow. Then again, it probably is only about another 3 miles according to the GPS when we come to Outpost #31."

Davison and Walker exchanged concerned looks, and both looked up at the sky at the same time. Riles said, "I'm willing to leave the decision to you about what we should do."
