Chosen-7

You softly hop out of your fluffy bed, and parade to your parents' room.

As you open the creaky door, you see the large black nose of your St. Bernard, Zoe, poke out the widening gap. You chuckle - only Zoe can cheer you up in any circumstance. You let her out and she races downstairs to her food bowl. That peppy dog was always hungry!

Your mother stirs as you walk into the room.

"Rowan? What's the matter?" she sleepily asks.

"I had a nightmare," you simply respond.

She sighs. "What was it about? It might make you feel better if you tell me about it."

You shudder at the memory of it. "Well... I woke up from sleeping... and I couldn't see anything... it was all dark... and I called for you, and you came and started talking to me... and then I think you went away and a monster started clawing at my head!" you shiver and swallow hard.

You mother gasps. "Rowan... I don't want to scare you, but I had the other view of that nightmare."

You stare at her, not quite knowing what she means.

"I was feeding Zoe - not really, of course, it was only a dream - and I heard you yelling. So I went upstairs and saw you sitting up on your bed. Your eyes were wide open and looked glazed over. Then you told me that you couldn't see anything, and tried to reach me..." your mom tries to choke out the words, "And a gargoyle-like creature appeared next to you and started attacking you, while a second one pulled me away, and wouldn't let me save you..."

"Mom... I don't understand how you had that dream..." you say.

She looks you in the eye, obviously dead serious. "Magic." she says, "The Mystics are targeting us..."

"The what now?" you ask.

"Mystics. You know, like fey creatures and dragons..." she trails off.

"Two things," you say, "What's fey? And are there unicorns?"

"Fey is another name for fairy. And, no, sorry, no unicorns. Only the Pegasus species still exists." your mom makes a 'tck' sound with her teeth, "It's a shame. Unicorns were so gentle."
