The city-state where you live. As far as city-state go it's not a big one yet, your parents are still able to remember when it was still just considered an " independent large town", but when you have steady population growth combined with an good location relatively free of major dangers it's only natural for a community to grow unhindered.

Klyton was originally founded by humans, who had heard of the riches in the Cloudspeak Mountains and decided to make their fortune and return back to their homes in the east.

It started out as a minor settlement, but as time went on, bonds formed, people became friends and new families resulted. Before anyone realized it, a small village with a thriving community had emerged and was named by the man Klyton E. Yates who had been a major organizer and instrumental in keeping a good relationship with the Cloudspeak dwarves who were initially perturbed by the fact that all these humans were suddenly wandering around in their mountains.

Soon the thoughts of going back home had disappeared altogether when news arrived that a new government had risen in the east called the Delantium Kingdom which had absorbed several of the small villages and towns where most came from. Nobody wanted to go live under a king when they had freedom here. Anyone who still had family back home only traveled there to bring them back to Klyton.

For a long time Klyton Yates was the unofficial leader of the town. He suggested major decisions and organized people, but never forced anyone to do anything they didn't want to do. He worked with the people rather than "ruling" them. He tragically died due to a surprise cave troll attack in the mountains while he was mining alone. He had been leader for so long at this point that nobody had considered that someone would need to take his place one day. Hessla Westman who had always been the most vocal opposition to Klyton announced that he was going to take over since the community needed some "real leadership" for a change. He had some supporters, but overall most people thought he was an obnoxious asshole and weren't going to let him run anything, let alone the town. He soon left Klyton with his own followers and founded the port town Hessla.

Eventually after some debating, it was decided that a small council should be formed to govern major matters such as defense of the town or administering punishment for crimes, but for the most part it would stay out of the lives of private lives of citizens. Klytonians could elect new people to be on the council after a few years if they felt there needed to be a change in leadership. This arrangement has worked pretty well with only a few changes to the system due to the growth of Klyton. (Meanwhile Hessla practically descended into anarchy soon after its founder died in a duel!)

The Klytonian community has always been a mostly self-sufficient one, but if anything else is needed, most of their trading is done with the port town of Hessla, the Cloudspeak dwarves or even the Delantium Kingdom.

While mining is still a major job field and the beginnings of industrialization is starting, (a couple of small factories have already been built) Klyton doesn't ignore other fields such as medicine or education.

The city is still primarily made up of humans, but there has been a small creep in other races making their homes there as well over the years, for better or worse. Lately there has been discussion on perhaps making the city less open to immigrants, especially to non-humans.

While Klyton doesn't have a major standing army, it does have a strong voluntary militia to fend off a potential attack, though there has never ever been a serious threat to Klyton. Most militia duties are reserved to protecting miners in the mountains or apprehending criminals. The idea of forming a proper military has always been brought up once in awhile, but again due to the lack of real danger to Klyton, and the cost of keeping a standing army has always been put on the backburner.

Ultimately, while it has its problems like any city does, most of Klyton's citizens maintain a positive outlook of the future.
