Brothers
"I'm going to be a father?" You ask.
"Yes," she confirms, tears rimming at her eyes.
"This is great," you say, sitting beside her on the couch and hugging her. "I can't wait."
"Do you mean it?" She asks. You nod emphatically, smiling with as much reassurance as you can muster... No matter how scared you are inside.
Gwen returns the embrace and the two of you go about planning for the baby. She moves in with you and continues going to school. You begin working 60 hours a week; saving up as much as you can for the new baby.
A few months pass and the doctor says everything checks out, that the baby is developing nicely. He tells you that you are going to have a boy.
The two of you start deciding on names and settle on Noah. In a few more months Noah enters the world, an ugly wrinkly thing that is somehow the most beautiful person you've ever seen.
In the summer you go to a holiday celebration with some friends. It is an outside picinic and the heat that day is excruciating.
As you are helping get some food on the grill you hear someone cry out at the party and people start rushing over to where the cry came from.
You know that too many people in one area can be a bad thing, and can hurt more than it actually helps. But scanning the crowd, you can't find Gwen and Noah anywhere.
Maybe you're being silly, but your stomach has a cold and empty feeling all the same.
