The Island of Destiny

You head down the stone stairs, careful to watch your step as the light gets dimmer and dimmer. Only a couple lanterns light the way now, signs that at least someone has been tending to them regularly. You think, anyway...

You finish the staircase and find yourself in a small but well-lit and cozy room. There are drapes, cushions, and a few tables full of scattered items before you. The look of the place gives you the feel that you've stepped into another world, another age in time. Everything just seems so...hand-crafted. The tables, the cloths, the papers, all of it. You plop yourself down on a large pillow, so taken aback for a moment that you really don't even know what to do with yourself. There are a couple paintings that someone has created right on the cave wall. One of them is a painting of a village, the other a painting of a woman.

You find yourself entranced by this rustic but intriguing home that someone has made for themselves in the cliff. Well, you actually can't say it's a home, you reason. For all you know, this is just someone's private getaway area for special occasions. Time runs away from you and you won't realize until later that you never even considered what you would do if the owner turned back up. Right now you are too invested in discovering the secrets this room may hold.

You look through some of the papers first, scattered notes and journals that someone did not care to organize very well. There are crude maps someone has drawn of the island and accounts of people showing up in boats and shipwrecks. From what you gather, this author has lived on the island for most, if not all, of their life. It does not say where they came from however, or where they live. But you gather that the author of this journal is a man named Vahro and he controls the "maintenance" of this island.

You find several more journals that you pile on a blanket, eager to look through them later. But then something catches your eye: a couple keys. One of them is gold and one of them is silver. They are both labeled "Submarine".

You then hear a cough and footsteps coming from down below. You look to your left and discover that there was a tucked away staircase leading further down into the cliff that you didn't even see before! You think for a moment to stay put and meet this Vahro person but your instincts take over and you know that you have to get out of here quickly. And now may be your only chance to take the submarine. You grab a key and begin to run back up the stairs.

Once at the top you open the top hatch of the submarine (a vessel you now realize looks very antiquated) and hop in. You put the key into what you guess is the ignition and turn it.

What key did you take?
