Eternal

Epilogue 2: Eternal Bane

Year 101

“Wow, Eternal Bane wasn’t even accepted everywhere in Rask and this was the place that liked it the most! So, you’re saying they absolutely love my book in this Mortos place?” you ask Ulivik while lying in your bed.
“Yes, well at least it seems to be popular with the necromancer rulers there. I dunno, I try not to travel through there anymore; they aren’t exactly welcoming to the living. Svelks are about the only ones who can get away with it. Apparently my people have had some sort of blood pact agreement with them for centuries. I imagine something awful was no doubt involved though.” Ulivik replies.
“A nation run by necromancers. Fascinating. Well I suppose that’s one way of keeping it from falling, turn the population into undead and unthinking slaves. Surprised more haven’t tried it.”
“Well it does require very powerful magic and not too many people have that anymore.”
“Such is the changing of the times. I mean Rask was practically lawless wilderness even during the Empire days, now it’s increasingly becoming a totalitarian state. Where the Eternal Dominion stood? Utter anarchy run by petty eternal warlords with no real goals other than destroying each other and all that get in their way. The royals of the Felkan Kingdom all killed in a revolution and replaced with a new ruling class, and that’s just the big examples. Shit, people rarely even kill each other up close and personal anymore, they just shoot each other. Yes, I think you’ve got some interesting times to see ahead of you, Ulivik.”
“Hey, you’ll get to see ‘em too.”
“Ha ha, no I don’t think so. Not saying I actually wouldn’t like to, but the end is definitely drawing near for me. Despite what today’s eternals might like to believe, we’re still human and our lifespans don’t reflect our names. My body is finally starting fail me, and the best medicine Rask has to offer isn’t saving me this time.”

Ulivik is always silent when you talk about your impending death like that. He knows the day will come soon, but it still isn’t easy for him. Though this time he tries to lighten the mood.

“Hey, I could get one of those necromancers to raise you from the dead if you want!”
“Oh yeah, I’ll be having a wonderful time as a mindless zombie hopping around with one leg. Thanks for the offer though.” You laugh.

You and Ulivik talk for a little while longer and he says he’ll be around for the rest of the week as he’s restocking for his next adventure. You tell him not to worry, but he mentions he’ll check on you once more before leaving Keplavisk.

A couple days later, you finally lose the battle you’ve successfully been fighting for over a century and death at last takes you peacefully in your sleep.

The day after you death Ulivik finds you. After his own short immediate morning period, he makes the arrangements to have your body burned as requested. He then takes your ashes to a high hill and scatters them to the winds.

“Rask may not have originally been your home, but it became your home. And now you’re part of it forever.” He says.

While never a king or emperor or any other type of major ruler, history does indeed remember you even if it is mostly confined to Rask and the surrounding territory. As you predicted, tall tales abound in taverns in Rask of various things you did or didn’t do. These are mostly positive in nature, if over exaggerated or outright untrue. Ulivik would always speak fondly of you whenever he was asked about his own past.

You manage to “outlive” even the newer eternals since when the Eternal Dominion collapsed into anarchy it wasn’t like the process of creating anymore was implemented. (After all why create more rivals?) The “fifth generation” was the last and they’re remembered about as well as generations two through four, meaning not all other than as warmongering nuisances. And long after they all died out through violence, you are still remembered. Even the original six you served with pop up in stories from time to time.

Scholars continue to debate over your book in Rask universities on whether or not you a were ruthless killer, an unfortunate soul brainwashed by an evil government and everything in between.

Whether you were any or none of those things is debatable, but one thing is certain, you were and always shall be ETERNAL.
