Eternal

Epilogue 1: Eternal Savior

Year 101

The end is near and it’s definitely a relief at this point. You’re just so tired of everything and thrill of living is completely gone. You probably would’ve ended it long before now, but you were still practically running the city for the next ten years even after you stepped down from power! After Eddings died in an “accident” his successor still consulted you regularly. These idiots couldn’t take a piss without asking you how to do it first, but still it kept you active.

By your ninetieth year you felt that life was just dragging on for you. It was at that point you started thinking about possibly ending it, but by that time you figured you might as well see it out to the proper end and that death would come soon. Of course you just kept on living…

Everyone who you ever knew that mattered is either gone or dead, and that even includes some of your enemies. Hell, for the last few days you would’ve given anything just to hear someone like Flog threatening to kill you. Sometimes you hope that Ulivik will show up somehow, but you know that isn’t going to happen. All the eternals you ever knew are most likely dead if they weren’t already. It makes you think back to Gruz’s last words to you.

“You’ll outlive everyone…”

Oh sure there are still all those wannabe eternals around, but with the rate they’re still killing each other, you doubt if they’ll be remembered. You’ve already outlived most of them too.

Still with the end coming, you try to think of the happier times in your life, like your time in Nalin with all your fellow eternals, or when you had your first “encounter” with your captain at Fort Destiny. Alison. That was her name.

It wasn’t a perfect life, and you probably could’ve handled some things better, but it could’ve been a lot worse given your origins.

In your last moments your mind wanders throughout various times in your life. You aren’t even aware of your surroundings anymore.

“Long live the Empire.” You say and lose your final battle.

Later that day one of the military nurses comes to check on you, and after calling a few medics in, you’re pronounced dead.

Your funeral is a lavish military one even though you didn’t really want that, but you were always held in very high regard by the military. The ceremony is still a respectful one and the current dictator of the city gives a large speech on all your accomplishments and how you were a savior to many. It’s mostly genuine.

A statue is built in your honor and you are placed into a fancy tomb as the “first ruler” of Keplavisk and its founder. Not really true of course since there were mayors before you took power, but after so many decades who is going to remember?

While your place in local Keplaviskian history is secure, you are also mentioned from time to time in other parts of Rask when civilization begins to get a better foothold again, though you’re rarely referred to as the Bane of Rask, but rather the Savior of Rask.

Whether you were one or the other or something in between is debatable, but one thing is certain, you were and always shall be ETERNAL.
