When the man doesn't reply, you widen your smile and try again. "Could I give you a ride someplace, maybe? We're a long way from home, and really, I doubt that bus will be coming around at this hour." You give him a cheesy grin, attempting to repair the damage of your continually bad joke.

Silence, again. Your nerves start to work up, random thoughts like Why isn't he saying anything? and What if he's deaf and can't understand what I'm saying? and even What a freak! passing through your mind. But, before you can decide what to do next, he finally quirks his head to one side, still looking quizically, and asks, "Are you... the One?"
