Dark Days
You awake to the sound of your son crying.
"Lin! Can you deal with him i'm gonna take a shower."
You walk towards the bathroom when you notice a report on the television.
"...In other news there was a explosion at biotech industries. The center for disease control assured us that the facility would be sealed off to prevent a spread of anything inside the labs. I'm Dian Wheatly signing off."
You didn't pay much attention to the report and continued on your way to the bathroom. *knock* *knock*
"Anyone in there."
"just a minute dad."
Your daughter opens the door.
"Good morning Jessica."
"Hey dad how long are you gonna be in there I was doing my hair."
"I wont be in long"
You step into the shower and think about your life. You joined the police force two years ago, growing up in your city you saw some of the worst things happen. So you were determined to make a difference. You had your first child at 16 and married Lin a few years after. When you joined the police force you decided to have another child and named him Kain. Your best friend Zeke signed up for the force with you but it was clear he was the better cop, you were just trying to keep up.
You turn off the shower and step out. After getting dressed you make your way to the living room and see your family standing around the window.
"Whats going on."
"Theres some people outside crowded together." -says lin
"What the fuck..."
"You shouldn't swear daddy"
you look down at your daughter.
"Right, sorry. Im heading out there to see whats going on."
"Okay be careful" -says lin
You open the door and walk towards the crowd.
"Everything okay here?"
They seem to be ignoring you. You grab one of the people in the crowd by the shoulder and turn him around.
"Hey I wanna kn-"
What you see sends chills down your spine your freeze for a moment then fall back. You see a mutilated corpse and everyone in the group devouring it. The man you grabbed then turns around and lunges at you. He bites and tears into your flesh as you scream in agony. You manage beat him off of you then quickly scramble into your house.
"Oh my god what happened." -says Lin
"I-I think I may have seen zombies."
"What zombies!?!" -says Lin
"I saw a bunch of people eating a dead woman and they looked....sick. If thats not a zombie then I don,t know what the fuck is."
Lin gasps grabs your daughter and steps back it bite you didn't it?
"Calm down we dont know if it works like that."
"Then how do you explain all those things out there."
"....Look i'll give you my gun and if I Turn into one of them you can shoot me okay?"
you walk over to the fire place and pull out a box.
"You keep your gun in the fireplace....?" -says lin
"This really isn't the time for this. Here if I change you can shoot me."
You head towards the basement.
"Where are you going?" -says Lin
"I'm getting wood to board up the windows. Scream if anything happens."
You head down stairs and get wood, screws, and a power drill. Then you start boarding up every window in the house.
"Okay that should be it now...."
"I'm scared dad."
You look at your daughter trying to hold back your fear.
"Its okay jess I wont let anything happen to you....any of you."
*Beep* *Beep* You hear your cell phone and answer it.
"Hello?"
"Thank god your alive man."
"Yeah.....are you okay."
"I,m fine me and Trish are riding around can we stop at your place."
"Yeah its fine when will you be here were right down the street actually."
you look through on of the boards on the window and see Zeke,s car outside. *POP* *POP* *POP* You open the door then Zeke and Trish run inside.
"I killed three of those things out there I hope more don't come."
"Did you shoot them in the head." -You ask
"Nah they go down like regu-....What the fuck is that?"
He stares at your arm.
".....I got bitten earlier."
"Mother fucker! You didn't fucking think about mentioning you were bitten before I fucking came in?"
"Im sorry man I wasn't sure if it worked like that I've been feeling fine so far."
"What the fuck do you mean you don't think it works like that haven't you ever seen zombie movies."
"Told you" -says Lin
"Not now Lin."
"Anyway this isn't a movie." -you say
"Well I've seen it with my own eyes after your bitten you change....Fuck! how long ago were you bitten."
"I dunno twenty minutes maybe."
"Twenty minutes? Hows that possible, the change is almost instant."
"I don't know but like I said I've been feeling fine. Now more importantly we need to figure out what were gonna do."
"I hear it hasn't spread past the city so we should try and get to the docks lock up and if something goes wrong we can try and make it back here or take up refuge some other place."
"Alright Lin grab Kain, Jess you stay close to me."
Jess looks at you with fear.
"Fine stay near your mother."
You all get in Zeke's SUV and make your way to the docks on the way you don't see any living person just the undead walking the streets. Until you come across a woman and her small child run past your car it looks like shes being chased.
"PLEASE! let us in! PLEASE!" -says the woman
You know that if you let her in it will be another person to take care of and theres always the chance one of them is in the early stages of infection. you also have to deal with the zombies that are slowly surrounding the van. This is the moment you decide if your a man that will stop at nothing to protect his loved ones or if your a saint who will at least try and bring light to the oncoming darkness.
"Should we let her in? its your move man."
