Dark Days
You step on the gas and speed off. You cant take the risk of putting your loved ones in danger.
"Daddy why didn't we let them in."
"It wasn't safe Jessi we cant take risks like that."
"But your a policeman aren't you supposed to help people?"
You cant bring your self to reply to your daughters question, you just continue to drive and try and convince your self it was your only option.
A few minutes later you approach a bridge.
"Not far now well be at the docks in no time."
"Do you think the boats are still there" Zeke asks
"We have to hope so."
After a few more minutes of driving you reach what seems to be a military post.
"I'm going to need everyone to step out of the car sir." says a soldier
"I'ts alright i'm a police officer."
"Thats nice sir but i'm still going to need you and everyone in your vehicle to step outside."
"Fine were getting out."
You and everyone in the SUV step outside and walk to a tent they have set up. Theres a female doctor preparing medical instruments.
"sit down and ill check your blood your blood to make sure your not infected."
"Make it quick i've never liked needles." says Zeke
The doctor takes everyones blood and finally makes her way to Jessica.
"Give me your arm sweetie, you'll just feel a teeny pinch."
Jessica holds her arm and shakes her head.
"Honey you have to be brave so we can get to the docks, can you do that for me?"
Jessie nods her head. But cries after the doctor gives her the shot.
"Okay everything checks out your free to proceed."
Everyone gets back into the car and stops at the docks theres tons of cars there. And even more people getting on military ships. You approach one of the soldiers.
"Where do these boats go exactly? theres a safe facility on a small island. a bout 200 miles out. Were taking any survivors there."
"I'm a cop anyway you can let my family on now?."
"......Show me your badge."
You take out your badge and show the soldier.
"You know I shouldn't be doing this but my dad was a cop so ill let you go through ahead of the others. Hey Tim let these people on." says the soldier
"Okay but these are all we can take were at full capacity." Says Tim
A woman from the crowd starts shouting.
"We were here first you cant just let the take our place!" - says the woman
Soon everyone in the crowd voices there anger.
"QUIET!" the soldier says as he burst a few rounds in the air.
"Three more boats will arrive in an hour you will all get to the island. This man has been risking his life to keep you all safe before this infection started spreading so hes getting on first. If anyone has a problem with that your free to leave."
As you walk onto the boat a woman comes up to you with two small children and tears in her eyes.
"Please take my boys with you there father died on our way here I just don't want them to stay here any longer please i'm begging you!"
You think back to the woman in the road and the question Jessi asked you earlier.
You could just get on now theres another boat coming in a hour anyway.
On the other hand Zeke will be with your family so they'll be safe and you only have to wait a hour before you meet up with them.
