The Island of Destiny

You climb up the wooden laddder where several more sturdy tree houses lie waiting for you. As you get nearer and nearer to the top, you can't help but make out the faint sound of music coming from above. It's a mixture of people singing and what sounds like tribal drum beats. Finally, you reach the top platform and get a good glance at the houses around you.

You see that four of them are empty, but the fifth one is housing a group of people inside. As you cautiously approach the people, each of whom are sitting cross-legged in a circle, you start to feel a strange sensation in your stomach. There is indeed a person with a set of bongos in front of them and now they look up at you.

"Ah, they approach," he tells the others while still looking at you. Now heads turn and as these people see you, smiles spread across all of their faces. You enter the hut timidly and awkwardly wave your hand.

"Here I am," you say weakly.

You now notice how strange these people all look. They are very tan but bear not much resemblance to how you would think a group of islanders would look like. Their clothes seem old and worn but still relatively clean. They are about equally sexed and all the same age. You'd guess around 50 or so.

Now a woman with long blackish-gray hair speaks "You have come from the world far beyond, chosen one. How are things out there?"

"Huh?" you say, surprised by the question. "Uh, yeah everything's fine. How did I get here and who are you people?"

She ignores your question and instead asks "Did Amelia Earhart make it home safely?"

"Uh...no," you say. "No, she disappeared over the ocean. But what does that-

"Ah, that's very unfortunate," she says sadly. "Well, I suppose you're wondering why you are here."

Fighting the urge to appear impatient, you calmly say "Yes, I am."

"Well, we brought you here. We are the Lost Souls and if you have been brought to this island, that means you too are very, very lost."

"No I'm not!" you counter. "I was doing just fine until I showed up here! And what do you mean Lost Souls? Where the hell am I?!"

"Relax," a calm-looking man says. He has a small beard and is wearing sunglasses. "The island must have brought you here because it was your destiny. Don't you know about destiny?"

You feel more lost than ever. "So wait, you were the ones leaving me those notes?"

The man shakes his head. "Nope, sorry, wasn't us. That was the island."

This is getting stranger by the minute.

"Well what does the island want with me?"

"What do you think?"
