The deadline was met with silence. As Tokyo floated over the independent island nation of Hawaii, its barrier glowed a green hue and the hum and vibration was heard and felt by all on the island. The top of the barrier opened and a beam of light shot straight into space, hitting an orbiting satellite. All across The Americas, its citizens watched in horror as this strange event took place live. Suddenly the broadcast ended. Followed by every light source turning off. The entire continent plunged into darkness. Planes cars and Sky-trains fell from the sky. Every piece of electronic device ceased to function bringing civilization to a halt. The noise of traffic and gridlock ceased as only screams and panic was heard in the streets as land-cars sat uselessly on the roads. People who have grown accustomed and spoiled by the convenience of technology reacted violently.
Masses of people rioted and looted whatever they can. The military that was left for homeland defense tried to maintain order but nothing that uses power can function. Plasma guns now unless were used as clubs to maintain order. The military issued antiquated firearms that used bullets. During a riot the order was given to fire unto an unruly crowd. The crowd screamed as the guns ignited but stopped when they felt no bullets hit. The military stood bewildered, one shot into the air, the gun shot but the bullet oozed out as if moving though jelly. Everyone fired but each bullet would come out the barrel slowly and fall to the ground. One soldier picked up a rock and threw it. It flew at regular speed. He picked up another one and threw it really hard, it slowly flew out of his hand and landed by his feet. A looter who had just stolen a crossbow from a sporting goods store, took the opportunity to fire a bolt at the military with the same effect. All across The Americas, something not only took away their power and technology but also their greatest cause of destruction.
On October 1st 2045, the President of The Americas and former speaker of the now defunct United Nations surrendered unconditionally to the Empire of Japan. This was signed in Tokyo where the President also was forced to abdicate her position. In exchange she was relegated to the role of Ambassador of The Americas to the Empire of Japan. This humiliation was punctuated by a demonstration of Tokyo's might. The weapon that brought The Americas to its knees was activated on the defiant Republic of Russia and China. This incredible technology that Tokyo now called 'Arclight', was unleashed during a momentary deactivation of its power to The Americas, so all its citizens could watch in marvel. All power was activated in The Americas. The world once again watched the floating fortress glow green and shoot a beam into the heavens. And so began a new dominance and era on EarthÂ….
Within 5 years The Americas was restored to full power. Using DM3 reactors, major breakthroughs resulted in new innovations. Robots were made to decontaminate radioactive wastelands around most of the world except in the wastelands of the Russo-China area. Which remained under the influence of Arclight. You could take two steps into the border with a flashlight and watch it die and take two steps back and have it spring to life. A popular thing kids in the area would do, is throw rocks as hard as they can and watch it slow down under the power of Arclight.
Inside the Russo-China territory, it became a barren no man's land as most people escaped to civilization as those who stayed devolved into tribes of raiders and warlords. Using swords and axes to fight as even arrows and darts were useless under the might of Arclight. West Africa experienced a new age of prosperity. One of the last places untouched by both Great Wars and free from fallout. West Africa unified under one flag, and found its fortune by growing grain. By 2060 much of West Africa's miles and miles of open plains are populated by millions of robots who cultivate the grain and supply half of the world's food needs. While most of its citizens live in luxury on the coast which becomes popular vacation destinations worldwide. The rest of Africa is still divided into separate countries with most of them looking at the west in jealousy. However the implementation of DM3 slowly puts an end to poverty and eventually disease.
The now glassed countries of New India and Saud stands as memorials to human hubris and aggression. Religion while not legally outlawed is now look down upon, and seen as the cause of much death. The country of Israel refuses to give up its principles and becomes ostracized from the rest of the world. Israel has the lowest use of DM3 in the world. Amongst so much destruction in the region it has for the first time in history of mankind been able to go a long period of relative peace. Islam is still the most practiced religion but now especially with the younger generation, many are outright abandoning any form of religion with most of them migrating all over the world. There are still many Christians, Muslims, Buddhist, and Hindus all over the world. But society has made it shameful to openly speak or practice any religion. Religious groups gather quietly in basements, away from large cities. People meet in the dead of the night like thieves simply to worship their God. By 2075 those who choose are laughed at by their peers, and some are labeled as fanatically simply because they choose to believe in a higher being. Man becomes more arrogant and in love with himself.
Great Britain has once again become the hub of Europe, with many countries being decimated by war, falling under the British crown (Some for the second and third time). The Americas is shocked but silent when Mexico votes to secede from The Americas under their old flag and name. North America quietly rebuilds it's cities and economy with robots and DM3 from Japan. Religion is still openly practices anywhere in Americas however a lot of people's faith were shattered when Armageddon happened and no return of the Messiah. Some religious leaders contend Armageddon hasn't happened yet, but with so much death, and almost reaching the brink, some has had enough of gloom and doom. Most turn to technology and science.
Japan has insisted on no longer being referred to its foreign derived name and insists on being called Nippon (some call it TEN for The Empire of Nippon). Eventually calling it Japan becomes a derogative term spoken by those who resent their nation's standing. The city of Tokyo still floats in the Stratosphere. It is has become the most mysterious and desired place in the world. Not even Nipponese citizens can enter Tokyo unless invited. Some feel this floating edifice has become like a city of God. Always watching and waiting to punish those who would use arms to achieve their goals. Some believe the leaders in Tokyo are not even human, using alien technology to rule over the world. But it does anything but rule. Tokyo issues no orders or decrees.
Every now and then a country or a group attempts to raid the sphere and its always destroyed by the barrier that protects it. Tokyo has yet to unleash Arclight on any country. Request to remove Arclight from the Russo-China area are met with silence. Some believe Tokyo may not have the ability to remove Arclight anymore, hence any deployment of it in decades. It is agreed that Arclight can only stay activated in one area at a time, hence The Americas was freed from its effect before being used on the Russo-China area. After a while Tokyo even alienates Nippon. In a few decades, the floating city is now seen as its own entity. The world has slowly recovered from over thirty years of war. A new age of reasoning comes, and with it an end to the ways of old. By 2190 the world population is at five billion. There are three languages that dominate the planet. The majority of the world speaks English. Usually with a second language being either Nihongo or Spanish. Those in business or Government speak all three out of necessity.
Currency has been all but been eliminated. Gold is still highly valued but monies are issued biometrically. The system started in the USSA, at first by fingerprint and or eye scan. But once this was compromised by scrupulous criminals a new system was devised from United States of Korea. Now machines use brain waves which are unique to each person for identity. Systems of credits which are called Decimals are assigned to a person and is tracked globally. Crime while mostly a relic of the past still exists but mostly with smuggling and drugs. Murder is easily track able by brain wave monitors. The world has finally become mostly safe at the expense of freedom. The line of poverty is almost extinct, there are some who choose to live in nature away from cities and technology. There are still some who live in the barrier of Arclight in the Russo-China area, which is the most lawless and thus dangerous place on Earth.
Along with the eradication of poverty, the working class is also an endangered species. Robots have almost completely taken over the agriculture and transportation industries. The Empire of Nippon made a decree that all life is sacred and bans the research and creation of artificial intelligence. Hence most robots operation systems are Virtual Intelligence or VI. A robot can only do what is in the realm of its programming, it cannot legally be made to learn above its function or to have feelings. Most citizens have evolved into a hedonistic lifestyle. Most drugs are now legal, the pharmaceutical industry was quick to pill-ize most forms of drugs and overcharge for it. Most drugs are classed as alcohol is, you cannot be publically intoxicated nor operate a vehicle. Drug smuggling is still a booming industry as it is illegal to make modifications or generic versions of trademarked drugs.
Advances in medicine have cured most diseases and defects. DNA manipulation is the most popular form of medicine to practice. As a person once went to the mall to purchase a cheap earring to pierce their ear, a person can go to a kiosk and get their eyes permanently colored or their stomach flattened and abdominal muscles extended. Most DNA manipulation is done in vitro. Even height and musical aptitude can be altered. Although personalities cannot be guaranteed, birth defects have been eliminated. Surprisingly or not, most people simply want to be beautiful. A generation of bright attractive and tall people permeates worldwide. And the average life expectancy has increased to 130. As such provisions worldwide were made and a person has to remain in school until 21 and is considered an adult at 25 to become a citizen one must either complete federal or military service until 25.
All nations of the Earth fall under the banner of the ANN (Allied Nations of Nippon), with the capital of the world being Kyoto, Nippon. There is no more war, no more diseases, and almost no more crime. Man has extended his relms to the bottom of the sea and the stars. Robots and micro machines build grand fortresses on the moon and the bottom of the oceans. Man has conquered Mars and Venus, and adventurous students of science hibernate on long expedition outside the galaxy looking for more areas to conquer. There has been no sign of life or evidence thereof (conspiracy theorists still contend the ANN is covering up evidence) outside of Earth. Some scientist weep that there are no more breakthroughs to be had. While some look for ways to make humans immortal. There are some who argue that they should be allowed to create artificially intelligence if not life itself. It is illegal to clone a person but not to clone organs as wealthy people have clone insurance in case they injure an organ or want to look younger with implants.
Man has become spoiled and complacent, instead of worshipping God many can now worship themselves as the silent Eye floats above them watching and waiting.
