The Island of Destiny

The bearded man who now lies dead before you leaves a disturbing image on your eyes. Slowly, you try to peel your eyes away from the scene and turn towards the ocean and after a few minutes you finally manage it. Just the sight of the dead man surrounded by the crossed sticks, as if his fallen companions had left him a nice patch of dirt all to himself. You gulp and now face your arch nemesis: the ocean.

Is it worth trying to swim for it again? Last time you tried that, well, you wound up here again. But your options are few right now so with that mentality you begin to slide off your left shoe. You swam with your shoes on the first time but the sogginess has really rendered your shoes useless anyway.

"Don't go," a voice then calls behind you, a sound that seems to float to you on the wind. You spin around and come face to face with a tall bald man. He wears a dirty tank top and cargo pants and you see that one of his eyes is covered with an eyepatch. It looks like he once had a mean set of scratches on the left side of his face, but time had slowly recovered his skin.

"Who are you?" you ask. Your foot is half out of your shoe and you slip the remainder out too.

"My name is Blaine," the bald man calls. "Like Michael, I was one of these people. They're my comrades. But as you can clearly see they've all passed on. So unless you also wish to end up that way, you need to come with me now."

"Who are you people?"

"We were in a plane crash about five months ago. We've been living out of the fuselage wreckage in the jungle and that's where I'd like to take you now." After a pause, he also adds "It's the only place that's safe."

He stands about twenty feet away from you right now and from where you are, you can't really read the expression on him.

"What happened to them?"

"I'll explain everything to you as soon as we reach the fuselage. But until then, you're just going to have to trust me. Okay?"

He extends his hand in a familiar gesture, as if proving that he is an honest person. It is now your choice. Should you trust this guy who was supposedly in a plane crash? Or should you continue with the original plan and start swimming?
