The Island of Destiny

You greatly accept her offer, a warm home-cooked meal just sounds so incredible right now. Plus, you cannot wait to hear what this woman has to say for herself. Just how did she come to be living out here?

Fifteen minutes later, you are seated at her kitchen table with a warm bowl of soup in front of you. The smell immediately fills your nostrils and as you breath in, you embrace and savor the smell. A few feet away your host, whom you've now identified as Gretchen, is at the kitchen counter preparing a delectible cesar salad. Once she finally sits down with her bowl of soup, you begin to take your spoon and enjoy your tasty meal.

As you enjoy your soup, Gretchen talks. "So, you're probably wondering how to get home from here." You nod in agreement. "Well, unfortunately I am not sure I can help you with that."

You stop slurping soup for a second and meet her eye. "Why's that?" you ask her curiously.

Gretchen darts her eyes back and forth from the nearby window and you can't help but notice how a certain look of paranoia crosses her face. Finally, she addresses your question.

"Let's just say...I live here under some arranged circumstances. As you have no doubt already seen, this island is a beautiful and amazing place. Many people would die to live here."

You consider what she has just told you as Gretchen hands you a glass bowl full of salad. You then ask the next question on your mind. "Who are you making arrangements with?"

Directly after asking this, you suddenly wish that you hadn't. Gretchen pulls an expression of distrust over her face and gazes at you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, as if she was suspicious of you. Finally, her look relaxes and she says "You're a newcomer here. There are things to be learned in time and I am not here to speed up that process."

"Now I am here to offer you my hospitality and as such, I will allow you a nice, quiet bedroom in my house for tonight. It is up to you, would you like the guest bedroom or the basement study?"
