Happy Monster Island
With the care and precision of a high-wire act you set off down the hill. The walkway is raised up you can't tell how far above the forest floor. If your foot misses you could spend the rest of the night trying to get back to it.
This is also the type of area you might expect to meet some Ashimagari the "sticky steps" Youkai you overheard one of the Islanders mention. Especially since you are the physical embodiment of the "unwary traveller" they love to prey on. Or even worse a "wall of confusion", Nooky-babe or something of the sort. It's said about them that they walk in front of you keeping pace with you and projecting a false screen of what's ahead. You start to wonder if the path you're on is really here or just an illusion. Or if you're only a step away from falling off the edge of a cliff.
The villagers would probably tell you not to worry that the monsters like the Nooky-babe just like playing tricks but you take very small steps all the same. Maybe they were harmless at one time, a myth can't hurt you afterall, but they're all real now.
Before you the path continues without an end in sight, but it must lead somewhere, maybe even back to the guest house. To your right you can make out what could be the glow from a lantern, in that direction the thicket isn't as thick and there are fewer ferns covering up the ground. If the light comes from a dwelling you can ask for directions, there may even be a public house that's still open.
What do you want to do?
