Happy Monster Island

Trudging through the wilderness, branches whipping you in the face, trying to remember your boyscout survival skills but remembering only ghost stories instead you finally come across a glimpse of civilisation. In the form of a plank nailed to a tree trunk adorned with faint Japanese characters. You translate one of them as "Silent" and suppose its the posting of a place name but it could say "keep off the grass" for all you know. Worse: the sign reads "Silent Resting Place" and you're standing at the entrance to a cemetary. If you're lucky there'll be a small town(Silent something) and some place to stay a short distance ahead.

Light comes from an oil lantern, hung on a branch by the sign-painter so she could work in the dark. She's dressed in a plain blue kimono with a black sash and her dark hair is done up in a bun. Hair pins swarm around her head like dragonflies. It's looks like she's tracing over the worn characters with her brush. Which she periodically dips into a small clay pot by her feet.

Her back is facing you. Despite the fact you almost ran straight into her she gives no indication she heard your approach and she keeps right on painting. Perhaps she's too engrossed in what she's doing to notice you.
