It isn't just the Dark One that you have to fight, but other faiths such as Karnites attempt to take you out as well, not to mention the usual chaotic types. You're greatly outnumbered and many that do follow the One True God lose faith and run, further weakening your cause. Eventually a large force of Dark One cultists storm the Church itself slaughtering the remaining loyal flock. Father Alberto's head is lopped from its body.

Soon you are the last remnant of goodness in this now completely wicked city and that soon comes to a close underneath several sword blows of Dark One servants.

Your last thoughts are that The One True God will win this war in the end, but for now the evil has won this day.
