Ground Zero

You calmly go to your van and start it up. You drive towards the city like you would if you were going to work. You see large black smoke clouds over it in the distance, out of control fires do doubt. You guess the exodus from the city is over, because the roads are pretty empty, except for the various car wrecks you pass by, this would almost be a peaceful "Sunday drive" if there wasn't hints of carnage on the road and the fact that it was Monday.

As you get closer to the city, your van stalls and then stops completely. You don't bother to turn it back on instead you get out of your car and look up in the sky shielding your eyes from the sun shining down.

You see a bright light and then nothing at all.
