Legend
While exploring and gold is all well and good, fame is what separates regular adventurers from the legends! You figure the faster you can become known the better. The best way you can think of to do this, is to start helping someone of influence. You know that the head of this city is Baron Varsakken. Being new here you don't exactly know how to go about these things, so you just attempt to enter his palace and ask if he's got anything for you to do.
Needless to say, you're stopped pretty quickly by the fully armored front guard.
"And just where do you think YOU"RE going?" you're asked.
"I'm going to see the Baron." you say.
"Oh, then by all means go on in."
"Okay "
"STOP! Sheesh! I can see sarcasm is lost on you. You can't just go in to see the Baron! He's a very important man and you're not! Besides you could be an assassin for all I know!"
"If I was an assassin, wouldn't I be sneaking over the walls at night rather than going in the front?"
"You'd be surprised, it's happened before. The Baron isn't exactly popular. In any case, you're not getting in."
"But I'm an adventurer! Surely he has some task that he needs someone like me to accomplish!" you say.
This statement causes the guard to nearly fall down laughing.
"Oh man, you're hilarious! With an announcement like that, you're either an assassin trying to play clueless, or you're actually THAT clueless! Okay I'll play too. Why do you want to work for the Baron anyway? I mean if you're an adventurer, surely you could find some old Wizard to go work for; they always have need of your type. I know there's one called Raltec who lives somewhere in the city. Probably would get paid better and have to put up with less verbal abuse too."
"Because I figure if I can work for someone of influence, then I will become well known quicker. I don't want to be just an adventurer, I want my name to be known throughout the land!" you say.
"With that kind of mindset you almost sound like some of the others that frequent this palace. Sycophants who suck up to the Baron, trying to gain his favor so they reap the benefits of being "known" by proxy. Actually you might fit right in."
"I'm not here to suck up to anyone, my abilities will prove my worth!" you say indignantly.
"Heh heh, then you're already ahead of everyone else. Actual constructive people are in short supply around here. The Baron might like to have someone useful working for him for a change since it's a rarity, though you might piss off a lot of other people in his court. Hmm, you know what? It's been dull around here, I'm letting you in. Either one of two things will happen, either the Baron will be intrigued or amused enough to keep you around, or he'll have you beaten and thrown out. All the same to me."
"There's also a third possibility." You say.
"Oh? What's that?"
"I could be an assassin, and I kill the Baron right in his throne room."
"Heh. Funny." The guard replies.
