You don't really have any reason to go to any type of church unless you're trying to get rid of a curse of some sort, if you're cursed or have cursed items you eventually find a place that will help you.
To remove the Dwarven Curse you'll have to give up 30 Gold pieces or backpack items (Each one counts as 5 Gold pieces)
To remove a cursed spider ring you must give up 10 Gold pieces (And you lose the SKILL bonus it gave you as well)
After you're done or if you don't need any of these things then you return to the square
