The Black Citadel

You take out the ring of keys you took from the guard and look at them closely. On each key there are different distinct markings, just like the markings above each cell. You look above Pand's cell to try to find a match with the keys you have. As you jingle through each key on the large ring, you notice Pand trying, though awkwardly, to get up and have a closer look at you through the hatch at what you're doing.

His eyes gleam and he struggles to find words, when he comes as close as his chains allow, to see what you're doing.

"You, you will free Pand?… May the gods bless your soul."

After some minutes you find the right key and open his cell. You go in and bust the chain confining Pand from the wall with the bottom end of your sword. He thanks you with tears in his eyes and says,

"My friend, who are you, why have you come here?"

You give your name and a little about yourself and your two friends your trying to find.

"Why only this morning a group of guards came and opened up a lot of these cells. I could hear them jiggling their keys. And the footsteps, I could hear them too. Must have been about thirty prisoners released from their cells, but I don't know where they took them. The slave pits or even the slave market, so the rumors say. I was taken when I was out one night collecting wood for the fire at the edge of Darkwood. My, my family probably thinks I'm long dead by now. Oh, oh, my loved ones!"

Pand puts his hands over his eyes and he begins to cry.

You can't take Pand with you so you give him directions to the entrance of the Black Citadel through the cave of the wilderbeast. You tell him about the loose stone in the cave to open the stone door, and you draw the best map you can of Darkwood and hope he can manage to get back to his family alive. It's certainly better him taking his chances out there than wasting away in a cell or a slave pit working to death for that matter.

You give him some final words and he disappears down the corridor. So about thirty prisoners were released this morning? If Zirder or Vandil were with them, where were they taken to? You think to yourself.
