You put the iron key in the lock and turn it. You hear a click of a bar being released so you then try and pull down on the lever. The portcullis slides up with a metallic crunching sound to open up the other corridor. You're unable to open the second portcullis to the corridor continuing straight ahead, because the lever is behind it on the other side.
