"We should probably hike farther down before we drink this." I say, looking at the sun.
"Doesn't look like we have to." Jesse says. We continue walking.
We walk until the sun starts to set. It's about the same time we usually stop for the night.
We start heading back to the truck.
"We did really good today." Priyan says, beaming.
"Yeah. It was a really good day. I had a lot of fun." I say
"I did too." Jesse says
When we get back, it's dark. We get back to the trailhead and get in the truck. Jesse drives Rex and Priyan back to the motel. We spend a few minutes talking about the trip.
Rex and Priyan go back to their rooms. Jesse is in the driver's seat, about to drive me back to my house before I get out and follow Rex and Priyan to the motel. Jesse is suprised.
"You don't want me to drive you back to your house?" He asks
"No. I'll walk back later." I tell him
"Okay." He says, driving off
I go behind the motel to have a smoke. I think of the hike today. It was really fun. A murmur starts to ring through my ears. It wasn't a language, but more like a gurgled cry. As the noise got more indistinguishable and loud over the next minute, my vision started to get weird.
The murmur then turned to a bloodcurdling scream. I got on my knees and covered my ears. My vision was getting more obscure. Colors were happening that shouldn't be possible at this hour. The motel became rubble floating in midair.
I felt a scream in my lungs, I couldn't get it out as hard as I tried to. I then felt a hand on my shoulder. That's when I snapped out of it and turned to face Rex.
He had a worried look on his face. "What was that?" He asks.
I'm still shaken up. "I don't know. I felt weird for a second." I tell him.
He reaches out as if to grab me. I flinch and move back.
"Sorry." He says.
I shake my head and take a few steps back. "It's okay." I say
We stare at each other for a few seconds. The silence becoming unbearable.
"Come on. I'll get you a drink of water." Rex said
He takes my hand and guides me back to his motel room. I take off my shoes and he closes the door behind us. I walk over to a small table by the window. I see a couple of sodas and some chips.
"Do you want anything to drink?"
"It's fine. I'll have a soda." I reply.
He grabs two cans of coke and a bottle of water from the fridge. He puts everything on the table.
"Do you want anything to munch on while we watch TV?" He asks.
"Just the chips." I say.
He gets the chips out of the bag and puts them in a bowl on the table. He sits down. I sit down facing him. He turns on the TV and flips through the channels. We end up watching a rebroadcast of a college basketball game, and we end up falling asleep together.
