Reservoir
Jesse took us on a hike on one of the trails. Of course Jesse had to take us on one of the hottest days.
"I can't believe we got to go on a hike." Rex says.
I nod "I'm glad we get to make the rest of this week work."
The ground was hot, but not to the point where it burned the bottom of my feet. At least not yet.
We walked for a few minutes before we heard a voice behind us "Hey! Wait for me!" Priyan is running to catch up with us.
He panting from the heat. I smirk. "You're just in time for some nature's fresh air." I turn my back on him and keep walking. He catches up.
I walk beside Rex. I feel like we grew a little closer after last night. It's hard to see where I'm going since the sun is shining right in my eyes. I wish I had a watch so I could check the time.
"I can't see a thing." Priyan complains, or at least that's what it's supposed to be "I think we should go back."
"We're not even close to going back yet." Jesse says with an annoyance in his voice.
I can't help but laugh. It bursts out without my control. Priyan glares at me. Rex looks at me nervously. I try to contain myself. I take a deep breath to calm myself.
"I'm sorry." I say, apologizing. "I just can't help it. The heat always does this to me."
"I think you should just stop doing that." Priyan says, faking a throat slash.
We've been on the trail for over 10 minutes and I already hate it.
I feel myself trip and I yelp out, before I could hit the ground, Rex catches me with his big, beefy arms.
"You okay?" He asks, smiling.
"Yeah, just my pride taking a beating." I say, smiling. "Don't worry about it. I'll be fine."
I feel myself blush. We continue walking. The path continues on the same direction. I wish we had a map.
I feel myself getting thirsty. Jesse has the water. I hope he's not going to pass out on us.
"Jesse, do we have any water?" I ask. He stops walking. He turns around. "Of course we do. Why?"
"I need some right now."
Jesse gives me the water bottle and I take a big drink from it. The way the cool water rushes through my mouth and down my throat feels so good with this heat.
I grab the bottle from my mouth. I give the bottle to Rex and Priyan.
"We should have some more." Priyan says.
"We do." Jesse says
He points to his bag and we see another bottle of water.
"That's good." I say.
We continue walking. After about 20 minutes of walking, I start to get bored. I wish we had something else to do. I start to think of other things we can do on our vacation. My eyes drift towards Rex. He's the only thing I can look at right now. I wonder if he ever gets bored. I feel myself smile. Maybe we can do something.
I whisper to him, "Want to go off trail with me for a minute?"
He nods quickly. "Hey, me and Rex are going to go off trail for a minute. We'll catch up later." I tell Jesse and Priyan. They both nod. They get into a conversation about something. I look back at Rex.
He looks nervous. "Come on." I say, picking up my pace.
We go to a good place where Rex and I have some privacy. I wiggle my toes. "It's hot out here." I complain.
"The hotter the better." Rex winks at me
I laugh, it feels good to have Rex around again, even if it's just for a week. I smile and my mood lifts. Then I look at him closer. He's nervous.
"Nervous?" I ask
"What? No. I'm fine." He says with fake confidence.
I pat him on the back. "You are so full of crap." I say, teasing him. He looks away from me.
"Fine." I say, going up to him.
I start poking him. He grimaces. But he doesn't move away from me. I look up at him and see his eyes are misted over.
"What? Why are you crying?" I ask, alarmed.
"I'm not crying." He sniffles
I touch his face. He turns his face into my hand. I look into his eyes. He smiles.
"I'm fine. I just miss you." He says, wiping his eyes.
"I miss you too. I wish things were different. We could talk about things." I say, frowning.
"What do you mean?" He doesn't answer.
I smile. "I know. You can't talk to me about stuff." I say, smiling.
He nods "I know." I shake my head.
"I just miss you." I say, squeezing his face.
"Wanna catch up with Jesse and Priyan?" I ask
"Yeah. Let's go."
We start to race each other up the trail. Going back to where Jesse and Priyan are at.
We end up catching up with them. "Hey." I say
"It's a pretty good view up there." Jesse says
"Yeah." I say, "It's great."
We continue walking. We come to a big rock. It looks like a great place to sit and have a snack.
"We should have brought some snacks." I say.
We take off our packs. We set them down.
We have one bottle of water left.
"I can't believe we got to go on a hike." Rex says.
