Errant
It could be an animal; not wanting to spook it you decide to stay put and listen carefully for any more movements. The steps are slow and far apart; you guess it might be a deer of some kind or perhaps a different creature. You wait all the same. Once moment, two. The steps get quieter as the creature seems to move away from you. You wait a little longer to make sure it's gone completely.
Slowly you turn your head to the side, hoping to catch a glimpse of it, but when you look there is nothing. You come back to your feet and cork your water skin once more before pressing on further down. There are only two paths to go, back where you've come from or deeper in.
