Savages of the Sacred Salvage
All is noise and confusion. The light still sears your vision, but you sense you're suddenly in a darker and more enclosed space. There is a shrill, wailing cry that pierces the air, and you clap your hands to your ears. But you can't blot out that, any more than the sound of clanking metal or the prayers and shouts of the Oath takers, who all sound shaken and less full of bravado than they were a minute before. You're now convinced Chameek is not among them, and you've made a dreadful mistake. The wailing abruptly cuts off, and now there are other voices too, strange and sharp, and a low, dull roar like rushing water comes to fill the sudden silence; not nearby so much as all around you. As your vision adjusts you see eerie flickering little lights of red and blue and green dimly washing across the walls of the strange chamber you're in, and figures crowding a passageway up ahead. Their shapes in the darkness are similar to humans, but not quite.
The cold side of a spinning worm brushes past your leg, and you stumble backwards, only to get jostled aside by an Oath taker. "Kill them all!" he shouts. "Remember we're here to take the fight to Hell!"
That seems to rouse the others, and they give a ragged cheer and begin to charge at the figures blocking the passageway.
The cheers turn to screams and the smell of smoking flesh as those figures turn out to have spears of their own, lances of red fire they fling with inhuman speed. Something smotes you in the chest, and you stagger back from the searing pain, collapsing in a heap among the dead and the dying of your tribe.
"All dead? That was a lot of them..." comes a strange echoing voice, floating in from the air overhead. The accent is bizarre but you can just make out the words.
"It's starting to become a problem," another voice agrees, this one from the creature you suddenly realize is standing right over you. You groan and try to move away, but he only points at you, and another bolt of fire leaps from his hand. You don't survive this one.
