I walk the streets of Paris for hours, enjoying the ambience, the sights and sounds that will disappear into the fog of time. This is the adventure I always wanted. I sit at a cafe and order some cake and a glass of wine. The wine is marvelous. Suddenly I am aware that two men at another table are talking about me and pointing. I get an uncomfortable feeling. I get up to leave. The men come over to me and demand to know if I am protestant. I know that a yes answer could lead to death. I tell him I am Catholic. He demands that I recite the Hail Mary. The cafe owner appears and sees that I was trying to leave. He demands that I pay him.
