Telepath
Mrs. Jelani sighs loudly, her lips pursed into a thin line. She looks at you, "There are people looking for you. They want the part of your brain that reads electro-chemical reactions-- thoughts".
When did your life turn into some YA book? Your plans this morning was to watch Netflix when you got home. "Who was the boy?" You finally ask.
"He is a fanatic of extraordinary things. He has been chasing after me in search of a telepath".
And now you have a stalker, great news.
Your teacher insists that you call her Jelani, get rid of formalities. She sends the car into drive and backs away from the curb. Although you feel safer in the car, there is still something bugging you about Jelani. You discretely look in her direction and reach into her mind. Some people notice when you bug through their thoughts. It feels as if something slithers through your head, so you try to only scratch the surface of her thoughts. "Reading my mind, are we?" She looks at you with an eyebrow raised. You feel heat rise to your cheeks, slumping back against the seat. "Well, pardon me if I am weary of you too. It hasn't been a normal day".
Jelani smiles, glancing at you. At least she was not completely closed off like every other mysterious adult in a YA.
"You can trust I am here to protect you. Your father sent me". This is news to you. You face her in your seat, urging her to continue. "He has been tracking the bad guys in case they got too close. Once they did, he hired me to keep an eye on you in school. Good thing he did; the stunt that boy pulled. . . I have never seen it before".
The screaming echoes in your head, but you shun it out. "So where are we going now?"
"There is a safe point under your father's business. Your mother should be driving there too by now".
You look out the window, watching the road zoom by. Many times have you thought about the probability of people hunting you. After all, who would not want to read minds? The amount of information you could extract from someone is exorbitant. Sometimes, you learn things you wished you never head. But if the government found out? Or even that fanatic guy, it could turn you into an experiment, no more than a mere lab rat. Your parents have done well so far hiding your ability, but what if it has caught up with you?
"I know you can hear me" The voice comes like cold water, raspy and low. "Now, we can do this the easy way, or things can get ugly". Your body tenses, "I have your mother with me right now, if you stop the car and turn yourself willingly, I will let her go"
