“So River, what’s your major?” You ask after a couple moments of silence.

“Oh, Psychology,” he exclaims proudly.

“Science guy huh?” You tease, a playful grin on your face.

“I’m bad at everything else so yep.” He chuckles.

Ari laughs with him, “English especially, he looks like a deer in headlights a hundred percent of the time in class.”

After that day, every Friday the three of you would meet up at the same old cafeteria. Which then lead to meeting other days to simply hand out, and the more you guys hung out, the more the three of you became inseparable. It was always you and Ari against the world, and adding River to the mix was nerve wracking to say the least, but as time went on you realized that your worries were very trivial.

On one specific winter evening however, those doubts began to resurface once again.

“Thanks for meeting up with me,” River breathes, the bite of cold making his voice low, “I know it’s weird not telling Ari about this.”

“No worries,” you say shivering, “but may I ask why we didn’t tell Ari?”

The small dimly lit cafe was relatively empty, and you guys try to wait for the warmth of the indoors to settle. River texted you rather abruptly and it seemed serious, so you without hesitation accepted his invitation, and grabbed a coat before heading out into the harsh cold.

River’s eyes are extremely focused on the table, and he glances at you nervously before speaking again, “Well um, it’s actually about Ari.”

“What abo—“

“I think I like Ari.” He rushes out, gulping thickly right after.

Your eyes widen, “O— Oh… really?” You try to keep a calm, neutral tone in attempt not to give River any more reason to be so nervous.

“Yeah, for a while now too. I just, I don’t know.” He presses his forehead against the table, and troubled expression painted on his face, “I don’t want to make things awkward, and make you feel like your in the middle of us, or a third wheel.”

“Well, you guys are my best friends, I know you and Ari would never make me feel like that. Also, if you guys let such a trivial thing ruin your friendship then I’ll slap both of you myself. Just… shoot your shot.”

“What an… odd way to say that but, if you really think I should then I shall shoot my shot.” River chuckles, uncertainty still faintly laced in his voice.

You guys continue to talk, but you can’t help this uneasy feeling unfurling in your stomach. Something that kept you from giving your undivided attention on River. You were confused as to why this horrible feeling had started to take over, and couldn’t place your finger as to what it was.

It was up until you were walking home that you suddenly realized what had happened. Something so unforeseen that it made your steps stutter into a abrupt stop.

You like Ari as well.
