Reach

The blaring ringtone causes you to jump, and the name of the caller ID made your insides coil. You despised the feeling, the way your heart sunk into a pit of distress, the selfishness that drowned you for feelings these things.

Reluctantly, your fingers grasp the vibrating phone that hummed against your nightstand, and press it against your ear before accepting the call.

You let out a shaky breath, “Hello?”

“Hey,” Ari’s voice is warm in a way you wish didn’t affect you, “River just… asked me out.”

You smile to mask the irony, “Do you like him?”

A chuckle sounds through the phone, “To tell you the truth, I’m not sure, but I’m willing to try.”

“So then give it a shot.”

So, you watch. A relationship blossoms, and you stand there, in the same place, every step of the way. You do everything you can, to dampen the ‘what if’s’ and express joy of your best friends newfound happiness, so that lingering burn could finally disappear.

It never does.
