A Tale of Two Choices

"Charlotte," cried Edmund extending his hand to Miss Rivers, an English Rose of a young woman; pale complexion offset by red lips and russett hair. Charlotte raised from her seat and began to rise.

At that moment, the central doors swung open and Peter Withenstrop came barging in.

"I forbid it," he shouted. "You must not dance with that woman."

There was an immediate and awkward silence. The musicians had stopped playing and all eyes were on Edmund, Peter and Charlotte.

"Charlotte Rivers? Harlot Giver more like. That woman had agreed to marry me three months ago, and just last week I found her in your friend Rodney's room in a state of extreme undress."

Charlotte ran from the room in tears and the silence continued.
