The Third Eye
As your feet slap on the pavement leading to your apartment you wonder if that was the right choice. You could hear her frantic voice shrieking into the phone as you made a quick getaway. She'd seen your face, but that was all she knew. The thick wad of money that bounced against your side while you ran reminded you that while you might have committed a crime, that it had certainly "paid" off.
Your body swings and slightly lifts into the air from your momentum of running down the street while snagging a hand out to catch your apartment's open, main door. A small man looks up at you terrified, cowering just inside the safety of the out-swung door as your body uncontrollably near-falls before his feet. Gravity's a bitch. You had caught his eyes in the violent shuffle, they told you too much- as always.
It's yesterday evening and the shorter man is nervously chatting with a much bigger man who was yelling obscenities and throwing dishes at walls. You knew this man, he was one of the people living in your apartment. You had seen this shorter man as well, he was often in the lobby biting his lips and pacing. The scene quickly moves to the larger man choking the other. The night moves in blurs of passion, from violence to gentle words to rejected sexual advances. It ends and starts again with the shorter man having locked himself in the bathroom and laying on the cold tiles. He leaves that afternoon after making a cup of coffee and cleaning a bit of the broken things up, no more appearances from the bigger man. Leading to right now, as he slightly shakes before you, light bruises touching his neck.
