A Tale of Two Choices
"Well, I'm sure he was some relation," said Edmund, "another drink?"
Charles took another swig from Edmunds hip flask, made his excuses to finish getting ready for the Ball and left the room.
Edmund attached the watch to his waistcoat pocket, took a final look in the mirror and went to the Entrance Hall of Loxley Manor to welcome his guests.
The Butler, John Brown, bowed to Edmund and went to open the door at the first sound of a knock. The guests had started arriving.
Within the hour the Ball was in full swing. The guests were all celebrating Edmund's birthday in grand style and all was joyous.
Edmund was annoyed to find his sleeve being tugged by the Butler just as he was escorting Lady Judith Prendegast onto the dance floor.
"What is it Brown?"
"I'm very sorry sir, but there is something of an emergency..."
