"What," gasped Dorothea, "how? I was told that she was dead."

"No, not dead," replied Jane. "Last night there was a visitor to this place. I was just finishing my scrubbing duty in the kitchen when I overheard a conversation between Mr. Trystall and a very fine looking lady. The lady was asking after 'her Dorothea' and Mr Trystall was telling her that he would never let you leave, never tell you the truth."
