A Tale of Two Choices

"Peter?" asked Edmund.

"Well do you have any others?" questioned Lady Withenstrop. Edmund could not help notice that a shadow crossed his mother's face as she asked this. What could she be hiding?

"But I thought since that business with the undermaid that he would not have shown his face again in these parts," Edmund said.

Edmund had no love for Peter, the older more handsome (yet somehow rakish) brother, who stood to inherit Loxley Manor.

"You must welcome him with open arms," commanded Lady Withenstrop.

"Oh, I will," thought Edmund, "but with a knife secured upon my person."
