A Sherlock Holmes Case

Edith takes a moment to make herself a bit more comfortable on the chair next to her husband, then continues with her part of the story. She never breaks eye contact with you, and seems to be completely serious as she says, "I love my father very much, but he is not the same man he was before making that dreadful trip. He has been acting rude and unusual, but something happened to me that was extremely out of the ordinary. I saw my father at my bedroom window one night, at an extremely late hour. I feel as if that is not as unusual as it sounds, but my room is on the second floor of our home, and there is no ladder or anyway up to my window from outside. I know I did not imagine this, and I saw him with both of my eyes. It scared me because he is quite old, and should not be able to climb around like such. Please, help us find out what his wrong with him." She finished her part, and sits back to wait for any other comment.

You think for a second, then go on to ask Mr. Bennett a few questions before you excuse the couple out of your home. You direct your attention to Mr. Bennett. "When did the dog attacks take place?"

"The 2, 11, and 20 of July, not too long ago." You take note that these dates are separated by nine days.

"Did he bring anything back with him from Prague? Anything at all?"

Mr.Bennett takes a moment to think, then shows a hint of clarity in his expression. "Yes, actually, he did bring something back. It is only a wooden box that is locked up, however one time I tried to open it out of curiosity, but he saw me with it and immediately became vicious with me. I have no idea what is in that box."

You nod and think to yourself for the moment, and then take the couple back outside, and let them know that you will give further instruction as to what will happen in just a few minutes. You go back inside, and consult Watson for what to do next.

"Seems a bit unusual to have a dog hate you for only one day, every nine days, don't you think?" Watson asks.

You nod, then go on to tell him your plan. "I say we go and fake an appointment with the professor, and see if there is anything unusual when we go see him. I believe that is best."

Watson thinks for a moment, then shakes his head. "He will feel confronted, and threatened. He'll automatically resort to defending himself. I say we go follow him for a day in Camford, where he works, and build an observation out of that. What do you think?"

You think for a moment before deciding.
