Fired!
"Is Linda... " Doe stops her question in mid-sentence as she stares at the three of us entwined on the floor. "You bastard," she yells, slamming her hand bag at my face. I cower in pain as she hits me a second time. "I'll tell Linda to fire you! You prick! And it's over between us." Fuming mad, she heads out the door, calling Linda on her cellphone.
"Here's your remote, Gemma," I say, as we hurriedly slip into our clothes. Linda arrives in no time. "I'm firing the three of you this very minute," she says, noting our disheveled looks.
I leave the building ahead of the rest, as Karen and Gemma had to sign some documents. I slowly walk across the street, not knowing where I was heading. I come to a park bench and sit for a while, thinking about the day's events. Suddenly, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I glance around to see who it is. I am met with a punch on my left cheek.
"That's for making me lose my job," says Karen. I notice that she's wearing skinny jeans and a tank top.
"Do it also on the other side to balance the pain," I say dejectedly. "I deserve more than that."
"Easy on him, Kar," Gemma yells from the other direction. "Each of us is partly to blame for what happened."
"No," I interrupt, as the two of them sit on my left. "It started with me. I should have just left that remote control alone."
"But if you did, I would still be Linda's slave." Gemma adds. "And I wouldn't have discovered someone as caring as Karen." She kisses Karen on the lips.
"I'll make it up to you two." I assure them. "I'll find you jobs."
"We'll help each other," Gemma says. "I know some people who could help us find jobs."
"So where do you live, John?" Karen asks.
I gaze around to ascertain my location. "Right across that block," I say, pointing to my right.
"We're coming with you." Both of them say in unison.
"Why?" I ask.
"There's some unfinished business we have to attend to!" Gemma replies.
What unfinished business?
