CHAPTER 419
Malcolm's attendant greets you when you arrive and ushers you into the sitting room. You nervously rearrange your skirts as you wait for Malcolm to enter. You're not quite sure if you've overstepped some kind of boundary or something. He'd never explicitly invited you to his home, but you'd merely assumed-
Your thoughts are cut off when Malcolm himself enters the room with a characteristic flourish.
"Carol!" He greets you with a kiss to the back of your hand. You can't help but smile in his presence. "What a wonderful surprise. I'm glad you came. I wanted to speak to you about something. Please, sit down." He leads you to the couch, your hand still firmly held by his own as he sits next to you.
"I'm holding a ball very soon," he explains. "Tomorrow night, in fact, and wondered that you might attend it." You're first instinct is to say no. You don't even own a ball gown- well, maybe that one that Malcolm purchased for you. Besides, you wouldn't know anybody at the party, anyway.
"I don't know, Malcolm. I-"
"Please don't say no. I'd hate to attend the party without a partner." You start at that. Attending the ball is one thing, but going with Malcolm is another thing entirely!
