The Thief of Alvera
It's been six days since you left Prera and you're only halfway to the pass. Impatience gnaws at you. You've been travelling during the night and hiding during the day. Vin has reported several instances of Grald's men along your course. A confrontation, you feel, is inevitable.
"Grald is running short of men. He doesn't have enough men to watch both routes." Vin says over dinner in a small cave."His men are scouting in groups of two. We can easily take them out in case of an encounter."
This news calms your nerves a trifle."So, when shall we leave?"
"An hour after dinner sound good to you?"
"Perfect."
You get back on your horses as the appointed time comes and set off on your northward course.
Your first encounter with Grald's men occurs late at night. The two men have been following you for quite a while. When the opportunity presents itself, you and Vin hide among bushes. When the two men come closer, you ambush them, Vin driving his dagger down one's throat while you slit the other's.
After hiding the bodies, you resume your journey, feeling slightly safer now that two of your chasers are lying dead under a bush. Regardless, you're still edgy and nervous. More encounters will only increase your chances of capture or death.
Your second encounter comes just before dawn, after hours of dodging and evading. This is a more direct encounter and your opponents have the advantage of better armor and weaponry.
The two opponents, armed with a broadsword and round shield each, charge as soon as they spot you. You draw your dirk and jump off the horse. Vin has already thrown one to the ground. You dodge your opponent's thrust, looking for an opening to strike.
Meanwhile, Vin, in an extraordinary display of skill and acrobatics, has stabbed his opponent at three different places. While you busy your opponent, he sneaks from behind and slits the unfortunate man's throat.
"We badly need better weapons if our situation is going to be like this", Vin says as you clean up the mess."We should take the weapons of these two fools."
"I can't wield a sword", you say.
"I can though, and that ought to be enough." Vin then straps one of the fallen men's scabbard to his waist and sheaths the sword in the man's hand."Now let's find a place to spend the day, sun will be up soon."
